I agree, I wouldn’t have it any other way! Living abroad makes doing the everyday things a little more exciting Enjoy working as an au pair, it is a wonderful, wonderful experience. I’m going to go check out your blog now! I love finding other Michigangers in the blogosphere!

After reading this post I think we are the same person, haha. I am also from Michigan and grew up wanting to travel. I just graduated college and am pretty sure I won’t enjoy going down the same paths as my friends so I am moving to Paris next month to work as an au pair. I have already lived abroad a few times and I just feel more alive when I’m in a new environment.

Sometimes living an unconventional life is scary, but most of the time it’s an amazing adventure.

I really think that Americans need to get down the the gap year! It’s such a great idea and I have no doubt that I would’ve done much better in uni had I taken a year off first. Good for you for doing that!

I agree with #1 completely. It’s so true and I already think that, even though I’m in a different situation (American society says gap years = bad idea).

I agree. Sometimes it’s hard, especially when everyone else you know is going down the more traditional life route, but in the end you have to do what will make you happy!

I’ve been following you on tumblr for ages, but only just discovered this blog now! I can completely relate to everything you wrote in this post, especially the first one. Personally, I did find it hard to go against what society was telling me I should want, but at the end of the day it’s our lives and our happiness is at stake so why settle?

I’m glad it’s not only people with seemingly no direction in life (me) who are leaving jobs to travel! And even bigger credit to you for realizing it was something you wanted to do.

Right now I have no immediate plans to come to Australia as I’m thinking of teaching English in Spain after Asia. BUT…none of my plans after Asia are set in stone, so who knows. I’ve thought about the working holiday visa before so it’s not out of the realm of possibility!
